Yardbirds

Some british bands like The Pretty Things, Them or The Yardbirds had a variable degree of success in their own country, but they were all very influential on the american garage band scene.
Here are the Yardbirds with Jimmy Page playing Shapes of Things. It was a proto-psychedelic single released some months before this performance, with Jeff Beck still as the lead guitarist of the combo.

Their astounding 1967 single, an excellent and yet very commercial song (and a deserved top ten hit), backed with the rocker Wave your flag and stop the train. I can hear the grass grow was of course full of psychedelic imagery and it was the perfect single for the summer of love airwaves.

My friend Jack (eats sugar lumps)

The song was didn't get much airplay in Britain because of the drug connotations of taking sugar lumps and flying across the ocean...
Nevertheless, The Smoke had a smash hit in Germany and other countries with their classic My Friend Jack. They had an album's worth of material and even more. The reissue of their 1967 LP with many bonus tracks is essential.

High in a room is another of their originals, a very uplifting song like most of their material in their LP.

Another shocking Dutch band

Shocking Blue were a very commercial band at the end of the sixties and early seventies. Some of their singles were extremely succesful and instant classics, like the ultra-catchy Venus,Hot Sand and Never Marry a railroad man. A compilation with their greatest hits is a must-have.

The acoustic guitar chords in Venus are unmistakable. Here they are performing the song on TV, playback.

The (Dutch) Outsiders

Often considered the best rock band outside the USA and Great Britain, the dutch Outsiders released a string of great singles in their native country. They enjoyed a big success locally.
Here they are in a promotional clip with their 1967 single Cup of hot coffee.

Midnight to six men

The Pretty Things playing live on a TV appearance their classic 1966 single, Midnight to six man. It was coupled with the mysterious and equally good Can't stand the pain.

They were at the peak of their power as a band, and it was one of the best singles of their career. An strong and immediately catchy song that flopped.
This is a lip-sync appearance in the television program Popside. Unlike other similar playback videos of the era, they actually pull it off.

The song is followed by LSD. After joking about Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich they pretend to perform Come see me, another devastating and fuzz-laden rocker also released in 1966 as a single.

A californian band, based in San Diego. They were a one-hit wonder (with Psychotic Reaction), but they had more talent than the average garage band. The german reissue of their sole LP (Repertoire) includes all of their rare singles with excellent sound.

The Dukes of Stratosphear - You're a good man Albert Brown

The streets of London were full of enigmatic psychedelic posters in early 1985, announcing the release of a record by a hibernating band from the first psychedelic era, called The Dukes of Stratosphear. Of course, they were a second identity for XTC. They had fun with sixties styles like this barroom song, You're a good man Albert Brown.

The Mole from the Ministry is a more psych tune, this one closing the first mini-LP by the Dukes, 25 o'clock.

Besides their Dukes alter ego, XTC got away with quite a few very sixties-inspired songs in their own records. We'll talk about it another day.

Booker T & the MG's: Green Onions

The legend of Xanadu

They were a very commercial and succesful group. Some of their stuff was rubbish. Some of their TV appearances utterly embarrassing. Take The legend of Xanadu. The singer used to bring a whip and use it onstage.
But I can't help liking The legend of Xanadu, whips and all. An excellent pop song. You cannot say the same of all their repertoire, but they had some good moments. One big hit for Dave Dee & Company. The company being of course Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Tich.
There is a truckload of other videos of this gang if you wish to watch them.
Their Hold tight, one of their best songs, appears in the latest Quentin Tarantino film, Death Proof.

Los Shakers

Arguably the finest South American band of the sixties. The "Beatles del Rio de Plata". They had some infectious mersey beat-style songs. Surprisingly, there is a number of available videos for your delectation. Muchachos, vamos, a tocar!

A rather silly TV show and some clownish antics. Anyway. Probably the greatest song in pop history: Do you believe in magic, followed by You didn't have to be so nice, both performed live. Good performance, despite the fans' screams.

Barry Tashian's band could set the stage on fire. Incredible musicianship.
This song is neither on their sole album, nor the expanded Epic-Legacy reissue in CD. It's also absent from A session with the Remains.
